Summary At the beginning of on inventory of the chemical composition of regional fruits and vegetables of the Amazon, analytical methods were adapted for the high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) determination of pro-vitamin A (β—carotene), vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and vitamin E (tocopherol) The first analyses indicate as excellent sources of β—carotene, Mauritia flexuosa L., Astrocaryum tucuma Mart. and Cucurbita pepa L.; of asco bic acid Theobroma grandiflorum (Culis ex Spreng.) Schum. and Gnetum paniculatum Spr. ex Ben. th. and of vitamin E, Mauritia flexuosa L. and Euterpe oleracea Mart. |

The calls of 18 species of Amazonian forest frogs were recorded in 3 localities: the Tapajos National Park near Itaituba, the Reserva Ducke near Manaus, and the INPA-WWF reserves near Manaus. Structural and time parameters and sonographs of these calls including previously undescribed vocalization by 10 species are presented. Unlike open habitat species, several forest frong species characteriscally demonstrated one on more of the following temporal parameters: very low call rates, sporadic intervals, infrequent nights of calling and synchronized chorusing. It is hypothesized that predation has influenced the evolution of vocal behaviour in Amazonian forest frogs. |

Abstract The paper briefly outlines work being done on the movement of cations under a Palmetum-type rain forest near Manaus, Amazonas. It is suggested that the low cation content of river waters Is concerned with the nature and dynamics of water movement in relation to soil moisture and tension as much as lack of availability of cations in the soil. Preliminary results support the idea of a 'by-pass' mechanism whereby the smaller pore spaces, saturated with water, only drain and provide cation-rich water late in the dry season. |

Abstract: Spherical ceramic bulbs were set up as weekly water-loss integrators on a clearing and below a 2 year-old Cecropia-commumty at Km 18 of the Manaus-Itacoatiara Road. The instruments worked well in distinguishing the particular responses of individual sites to the impact of atmospheric agents as solar radiation, air temperature, air humidity and wind. Water-loss was primarily dependent on the order of magnitude of the weekly total of solar radiation and the presence or lack of a standing crop. Already a scarce secondary growth will reduce the weekly amount of water lost to the atmosphere considerably. Shelter-wood, however, considering the crop specific demands if introduced to tropical agriculture would provide favourable conditions as far as the... |

During the past fifteen years, African Strychnos species have been pharmacologically and chemically screened by some European Universities, sometimes with the collaboration of some African Institutes. Strychnos usambarensis will be discussed here because of our interest in it, after the discovery of its use in the preparation arrow poison with curarizing activity. The European studies have show thah the African species of Strychnoschemically are very similar to certain South-American species. Indeed, the occurrence in the African species of curarizing quaternary bases, and in the American species of tetanizing tertiary bases, such as akagerine, emphasizes the unity of genus Strychnos in terms of it alkaloids. Many biological activities (antmicrobial,... |

Estimates of terrestrial biomass depend critically on reliable information about the specific gravity of the wood of forest trees. The study reported on here was carried out in the southern Peruvian Amazon and involved collection of wood samples from trees (70 spp.) in intact forest stands. Results demonstrate the high degree of variability in specific gravity (ovendry weight/green volume) in trees at single locations. Three forest types (swamp, high terrace forest with alluvial soil, and sandy-soil forest) had values close to the average reported for tropical forest woods (.69). Two early successional forest types, which make up as much as 12% of the total vegetated area in this part of the Amazon, had values significantly lower (.40). An increase in... |

ABSTRACT Zootherapy (the use of the therapeutic potential of animals) is at least 6,000 years old, and has been kept active throughout generations until modern days. Animal fat is commonly used in the zootherapeutic folk medicine from South America, specially the green anaconda’s fat, which is widely promoted as a natural medicine to treat wounds, even though there is no scientific evidence showing its efficacy. In this study we compared the total healing time and the proportional daily reduction of dorsal epithelial incisions in adult male Wistar rats treated with nitrofural (a commercial cicatrizing ointment) and with anaconda fat. We applied the treatments every two days and measured the incision diameter daily, during ten consecutive days. Differences... |
